From Campus to Volunteers: International Collaboration to Prevent Tuberculosis

Surakarta – Politeknik Indonusa Surakarta held a Community Service event with the theme “Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Tuberculosis: From Campus to Health Volunteers” on Friday, September 19, 2025. The event featured Dr. Mahjanah Hussein from the University of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as the keynote speaker, alongside faculty members from the Pharmacy Program and the Medical Laboratory Technology Program at Politeknik Indonusa Surakarta.

The event was attended by Posyandu cadres, known as Health Volunteers, as well as students from Politeknik Indonusa  Surakarta, who are expected to serve as a bridge in strengthening understanding and skills regarding the prevention and control of tuberculosis (TB), one of the global health issues that remains a serious concern. The agenda was opened by the head of the village, Joko Susilo. In his speech, he expressed his appreciation for the assistance provided by Politeknik Indonusa Surakarta in response to the current rise in TB cases in the region.

In her presentation, Dr. Mahjanah Hussein emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration, particularly between health workers, academics, and the community. “The role of health volunteers is vital in raising public awareness of the dangers of TB. Collaboration with students will strengthen knowledge transfer, innovation, and the spirit of service,” she said.

Meanwhile, speakers from Indonusa Polytechnic Surakarta added scientific perspectives from the fields of pharmacy and medical laboratory technology. The material presented covered the role of posyandu cadres in handling TB, recognizing TB symptoms, prevention strategies, proper use of medication, and the importance of laboratory tests for early diagnosis.

Through this Community Service activity, it is hoped that synergy will be established between the campus and the community in efforts to create a healthier and TB-free environment, in line with the vision of sustainable health development.
